Baroque country house Regency gilt mirror really does make a statement. The frame is bright, opulent and wonderfully scrolled but it’s the 18th Century glass that really sets this piece apart. We suspect that at some stage the original mirror plate broke and it was at this stage that an 18th Century mirror glass was incorporated, giving it a truly other worldly look. Sourced from a provincial country house and as such, the glass, oddly cut, suggests a frugality many people will appreciate today for it’s environmental credentials alone. Mirror glass remained expensive and was often re-cut and re-used. Gesso over wood. 18th Century mirror plate in two pieces, cut and set together to present well. Superb mottling to the glass, one can only wonder at the myriad of faces who have looked at their reflections here over the years. Some age related cracks to the gesso as one would expect.
