Salt Glaze "Green Man" Fertiity Jug

Salt Glaze "Green Man" Fertiity Jug

The Green Man is found in many cultures from many ages around the world, and is associated with fertility. The Green Man is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth and has strong associations in Saxon culture.
The Green Man is popular in association with wine and ale too and as such this particular jug is a fine exmple of German Salt Glaze pottery. Salt-glazed ware, mostly European stoneware, uses ordinary salt. A grouped collection, such as those in the image showing a mass display is stunning.
Underside is marked 58 and there is a rough raised patch of glaze from the kiln.
Whilst salt glaze is found in tankard form quite often this chap is a rare delight.
